Sultānganj sits on the southern bank of the Ganges in Bihar's Bhagalpur district. From above, the river is the defining shape: a wide band of water with sandbars and shifting channels, and the town pressed against its edge. Streets run back from the bank in an irregular pattern, and a railway line cuts across the town parallel to the river.
The town is known for the Ajgaibinath temple, which stands on a rocky outcrop in the Ganges itself.
