Sumter lies in the Midlands of South Carolina, on flat to gently rolling ground typical of the inner coastal plain. The map shows a compact historic downtown laid out on a grid, with Main Street at its core, surrounded by neighbourhoods that loosen into curving suburban streets and then fields and pine woods.
