Sundarnagar lies in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, in one of the wider valleys of the lower Himalaya. Its name means 'beautiful town', and it was once the capital of the princely state of Suket. On the map it sits on fairly flat ground with hills rising around it. The main highway toward Mandi and Manali passes through the centre.
The Beas–Sutlej Link Project, which diverts water from the Beas to the Sutlej, created a balancing reservoir here known as Sundarnagar Lake. A long engineered channel runs through the valley. On a hill above the town stands the Mahamaya temple, one of Sundarnagar's best-known landmarks, and it looks out across the valley floor.
