Tachilek lies in eastern Shan State, on the northern border of Myanmar with Thailand. A narrow river separates it from the Thai town of Mae Sai, and from above the two settlements face each other across the water like mirror images. A bridge carries the main border crossing, and the busiest streets of Tachilek gather close to it, with markets and shops lining the approach.
The town sits near the Golden Triangle, the area where Myanmar, Thailand and Laos meet along the Mekong. Beyond the riverside centre, the streets spread over rolling ground, and green hills rise to the north and west. Roads lead away from the border toward the interior of Shan State.
