Talence borders Bordeaux on the south and continues the city's tight streets of single-storey stone houses, known locally as échoppes. From above, the northern part of the commune is fine-grained and almost continuous with Bordeaux itself. Further south the pattern opens up into larger plots, parks and the wide grounds of the university.
The Bordeaux university campus covers a large area shared with Pessac and Gradignan, and tram line B crosses Talence to serve it.
