Tando Jam lies a short distance east of Hyderabad in Sindh, on the flat alluvial land east of the Indus. It is best known as home to Sindh Agriculture University and several agricultural research institutes. These give the town an unusual character for its size: large parts of the map are taken up by experimental fields, campus grounds and orderly institutional plots.
The surrounding countryside is shaped by irrigation. Canals and distributaries fed by the Indus system run across the plain in long, deliberate lines, and field boundaries follow them. On a map these waterways stand out as some of the most geometric features. They contrast with the denser, less regular streets of the town's commercial core and older neighbourhoods.
