Tanjung Balai is the main town of Karimun Island in Indonesia's Riau Islands province. It lies at the western entrance to the Singapore Strait, near the busy shipping lanes of the Strait of Malacca. On a map, the town wraps around the southern shoreline of the island. Streets run close to the water, and piers reach out into the sea.
