Tānsen, the centre of Palpa District, sits high on a ridge of the Mahabharat range in western Nepal. The terrain shapes everything on the map. Roads switchback up the hillside in tight hairpins, the old town packs itself onto the slope in steep, narrow lanes, and the built-up area thins quickly where the ground drops into the valleys below.
The town has a strong Newar heritage visible in its brick houses, temples and the old palace square, Tansen Durbar. It is also known across Nepal for Palpali dhaka, a woven cloth used for the traditional topi cap. Down in the Kali Gandaki valley, the palace of Rani Mahal stands by the river.
