Tapauá lies in the interior of Amazonas state, Brazil, on the Purus river, one of the major tributaries of the Amazon. The municipality covers a vast area of rainforest, and like many towns in the region, it is connected to the rest of the state mainly by river.
From above, the town is a small grid of streets pressed against the riverbank, with the waterfront as its natural centre. The Purus loops broadly through the landscape, accompanied by side channels, oxbow lakes and seasonally flooded forest, all of which change with the rise and fall of the water.
