Tarnów lies in the Lesser Poland region, east of Kraków, where the Carpathian foothills meet the Vistula basin. The old town sits on a hill, arranged around a Renaissance market square with a town hall in the middle. On a map, its compact, nearly oval layout stands out clearly from the wider streets and housing estates that spread across the lower ground.
The Biała river runs along the western side of the city and flows into the Dunajec nearby, so river valleys frame the urban area. Tarnów is often described as one of the warmest cities in Poland.
