Tavares is defined by water. The town lies along the northern shore of Lake Dora, with Lake Eustis close by, both part of the Harris Chain of Lakes in central Florida. On a map the lakes dominate the frame, broad pale shapes whose irregular shorelines are traced by residential streets, docks and small inlets.
Linking the two lakes is the Dora Canal, a short, winding channel through low wetland.
