Tecomán lies on the flat coastal plain of Colima, a few kilometres inland from the Pacific. From above, the city forms a compact grid of streets, surrounded by fields and orchards divided into regular plots, with roads leading south toward the coast and north toward the state capital.
The city is known as a major centre for lime production, and orchards of citrus trees and coconut palms dominate the surrounding land. The nearby coast has long beaches, including Boca de Pascuales, known for its powerful surf, where the land meets the ocean in a long, straight shoreline.
