Tejuçuoca is a small municipality in the interior of Ceará, in the semi-arid backlands west of Fortaleza. The town is compact, and from above it appears as a short arrangement of streets around a central area, with houses lining the principal roads and thinning out into open land within a few blocks of the centre.
The surrounding landscape is caatinga, the dry scrubland of north-eastern Brazil, which turns grey-brown in the dry season and green after the rains. On the map this becomes wide, quiet space crossed by rural roads and seasonal streams. The lines of these streams, dry for much of the year, add faint branching shapes to the countryside.
