Tetovo sits in northwestern North Macedonia, where the flat Polog valley meets the steep Šar Mountains. The town lies right at the base of the slopes, and above it roads climb toward the Popova Šapka ski area.
The Pena River runs down from the mountains and through the middle of town. On the map it appears as a clear diagonal line with streets on both banks. Along its bank stands the Painted Mosque, known for its decorated facade. Not far away is the Arabati Baba Tekke, a Bektashi complex set among gardens and walls.
To the east the street grid loosens and fades into the open farmland of the valley. To the west the town stops abruptly at the rising ground. A Tetovo map poster shows both edges: mountain on one side and plain on the other, with the river cutting between them.
