Thaton is in Mon State in southern Myanmar, on the low plain east of the Gulf of Martaban. The town stretches along a north–south axis where the main road and the railway between Yangon and Mawlamyine run side by side. Paddy fields lie to the west, and wooded hills rise close by to the east.
Thaton is one of the oldest names in Mon history. It was the capital of a Mon kingdom that the Bagan king Anawrahta conquered in the eleventh century, and his victory is traditionally credited with bringing Theravada Buddhism and Mon learning to Upper Burma. The sea was once much closer than it is today. Centuries of silt have moved the coastline away from the town.

Hills to the east
Forested high ground rises close to the eastern edge of town. It limits growth on that side and leaves a strong boundary between streets and blank paper.
Plain towards the gulf
West of the town, flat farmland stretches towards the Gulf of Martaban. On the poster it becomes calm white space that balances the dense centre.
