Thayetmyo sits on the western bank of the Irrawaddy in the Magway Region, directly across from the town of Aunglan. On a map the river is the dominant feature, a wide band running beside the town, with sandbanks and channels that change with the seasons. The streets follow the bank before spreading inland toward low hills.
The name means 'mango town' in Burmese. After the Second Anglo-Burmese War in the 1850s, Thayetmyo lay close to the frontier between British-held Lower Burma and the Burmese kingdom, and it became a cantonment town, which left a more regular street pattern in parts of the settlement.
