Tienen, known in French as Tirlemont, lies in the eastern part of Flemish Brabant, in gently rolling farmland between Leuven and Sint-Truiden. On the map, the old town is easy to find: streets converge on a very large market square, and a ring of boulevards traces the line of the former town walls.
The town is known across Belgium as the sugar city. Its large sugar refinery, fed by the sugar beet fields that surround it, has shaped both the economy and the skyline. Near the Grote Markt stands the Church of Our Lady ten Poel, a Gothic landmark whose outline dominates the square.
