Tiruvalla lies in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, close to the low-lying paddy country of Kuttanad. The Manimala River flows near the town and the Pamba is not far away, so the map is laced with water: rivers, streams, canals and the long, pale shapes of rice fields. Streets follow the higher ground, winding between homesteads rather than falling into a grid.
The town is known for the Sreevallabha Temple, one of the old Vaishnava shrines of Kerala, and for its many churches, reflecting a long Christian presence in Central Travancore.
