Tiszaújváros is one of Hungary's socialist new towns, built from the 1950s alongside a major chemical plant near the Tisza River. It was known as Leninváros until 1991. From above, the planned character is obvious: wide, straight avenues, residential districts of apartment blocks set in green space, and a clear separation between the town and the industrial zone.
The Tisza, with its bends, backwaters and flood plain, runs along the eastern side, bringing soft curves to an otherwise geometric plan. Today the town is also known in the sporting world as a long-standing host of international triathlon competitions.
