Toledo is one of the most recognisable city plans in Europe. The Tagus cuts a deep gorge in a tight loop around a rocky hill, enclosing the old city on three sides. On the map, this gives a near-island of dense, twisting streets inside a clean curve of river, with walls and gates closing the open north side.
Inside the loop, the medieval street plan is almost unchanged. Narrow lanes wind between the cathedral, the square bulk of the Alcázar on the highest point, and the former Jewish quarter to the west. Two old bridges, Alcántara to the east and San Martín to the west, cross the gorge and link the city with the hills beyond.
Known as the city of three cultures for its Christian, Muslim and Jewish heritage, Toledo has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 and was El Greco's home.
