Tonk lies in eastern Rajasthan near the Banas River, whose broad, often dry bed curves past the town. On the map the old walled town forms a dense cluster of lanes, while low hills rise nearby and roads lead out toward Jaipur and other towns in the region. Farmland surrounds the built area in a patchwork of fields.
Tonk was the capital of a princely state ruled by Nawabs, the only Muslim-ruled princely state in Rajputana. That history remains in its buildings, including the Sunehri Kothi with its gilded interior, and in the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Arabic and Persian Research Institute, known for its collection of manuscripts.
