Topi is a town in Swabi district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the flat, fertile land close to the Indus River. The dam at Tarbela lies a short distance upstream, and the river passes near the town on its way south. From above, Topi appears as a compact built-up area surrounded by fields and linked to nearby villages by a web of roads and tracks.
The town is best known as the home of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, one of Pakistan's well-regarded engineering universities. Its campus sits just outside the town and appears on the map as a separate, planned layout of buildings, roads and open spaces, distinctly more regular than the streets around it.
Beyond the town and the campus, the landscape is largely agricultural, with irrigation channels and field boundaries dividing the plain, and hills rising to the north.
