Tuchang lies in the Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country north of the city's central districts. The landscape here is typical of the eastern Sichuan basin: rounded hills, narrow valleys and terraced fields on almost every slope. From above, the town is a compact cluster of buildings where several roads meet, with the land around it broken into small irregular plots.
Like many towns in Chongqing's outer districts, Tuchang has been drawn closer to the city as new roads and expressways reached out from the centre. The map shows both layers: older lanes fitted into the terrain and newer, wider roads that cut straighter lines through the hills. Streams and small reservoirs sit in the valley bottoms.
