Tukums lies west of Riga, beyond the resort town of Jūrmala, and is often called the gateway to Kurzeme, the western region of Latvia historically known as Courland. The town sits on gently rolling, partly wooded ground. On a map it forms a compact, roughly round shape surrounded by forest and farmland, with roads leading off toward the coast and the west.
The old centre is a network of short, winding streets, laid out long before the town's later growth, and it is still the densest part of the plan. Around it, residential areas spread outward in a mix of grids and curves. Railway lines run around the edge of town, and the electric commuter trains from Riga, which pass through Jūrmala, end their route here.
