Turaru is a small community in the interior of Ceará, in northeastern Brazil, set in the semi-arid sertão west of Fortaleza. It is a place of modest scale: a handful of streets around a central area, with homes extending along the roads that lead in and out. On a map, it appears as a small, clearly defined cluster in a wide rural landscape.
The surrounding country is typical of the Ceará backlands, with low hills, scrubland and fields worked by small farms. Water is precious here, and small reservoirs, known locally as açudes, appear on the map as irregular shapes scattered across the terrain. Seasonal streams connect them, flowing mainly during the rainy months early in the year.
Little has been written about Turaru beyond the region, which makes the map an especially honest portrait.
