Oasis vineyards
Around the city, vineyards and irrigated fields create a dense, regular texture that stands out sharply against the empty desert, marking the reach of the oasis.

Turpan Map Poster & Print
Turpan lies in the Turpan Depression in eastern Xinjiang, one of the lowest land areas on Earth; nearby Ayding Lake sits well below sea level. The city is known for extreme summer heat and very little rainfall, and from above it appears as a green oasis surrounded by bare desert and stony plains.
The oasis is sustained by the karez, an ancient system of underground channels that carries meltwater from the mountains to the fields. On the map, vineyards and irrigated plots form a dense pattern around the city, and Turpan is famous for its grapes and raisins. The ruins of Jiaohe and Gaochang, two ancient cities, lie a short distance away.
A Turpan map poster shows the stark contrast between cultivation and desert. The compact city streets, the fine grid of vineyards and fields and the empty land beyond make a strong composition, one that reveals how human effort has shaped this oasis in one of the harshest environments in Asia.

Karez channels
Underground irrigation channels bring water from distant mountains, and lines of access shafts across the landscape trace their routes toward the fields and villages.
Desert margins
Beyond the green belt, the land opens into bare plains and hills, and the sudden edge between oasis and desert gives the map its most striking feature.
