Tuvāgudi lies east of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, along the main road toward Thanjavur and the Kaveri delta. From above, the town is organised along that highway, with residential streets and small neighbourhoods branching off it. Planned areas with regular street patterns sit next to older, more irregular settlements, and the land around them is flat and partly agricultural.
The town is best known as the home of the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, one of India's leading engineering schools, whose large campus appears on the map as a distinct area of wide roads, hostels and open ground. The wider area is part of an industrial belt east of Tiruchirappalli, and several large industrial townships and facilities are located nearby.
