Urbana is the seat of Champaign County in east-central Illinois. Together with neighbouring Champaign, it is home to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The two cities have grown into one continuous urban area on the flat prairie, with the campus straddling the line between them. Before the university arrived, Urbana was a county seat where Abraham Lincoln argued cases as a circuit-riding lawyer.
On a map, Urbana is a study in prairie geometry. The streets follow a largely regular grid aligned to the compass, broken by the long, open rectangles of campus and research fields.
