Veszprém lies in the Bakony hills, north of Lake Balaton, and its shape comes directly from the ground. The historic castle district sits on a narrow ridge of rock, with a single street running along its top. Below it the Séd stream winds through a deep valley, and the rest of the town climbs the hills on either side, creating a layered, irregular street pattern.
It is often called the City of Queens, because for centuries the bishops of Veszprém had the right to crown Hungarian queens. In 2023 the town and the Balaton region shared the title of European Capital of Culture. A tall viaduct named after Saint Stephen crosses the Séd valley and links the centre to the western districts.
