Vyshhorod stands on the high right bank of the Dnieper, just north of Kyiv. Its map is dominated by water: the river running south toward the capital, and immediately upstream the long dam of the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant, behind which the Kyiv Reservoir spreads north in a wide sheet often called the Kyiv Sea.
The town is one of the oldest in Ukraine, mentioned in chronicles of the tenth century as a residence of Princess Olga. It is also the origin of the icon known as the Theotokos of Vyshhorod, later famous as the Vladimir Mother of God. The modern town grew largely with the construction of the hydroelectric plant, and its neighbourhoods of apartment blocks and green courtyards sit on the higher ground above the river. North of the dam, the reservoir widens into a vast expanse of water, filling much of the upper frame with calm open space.
