Waddinxveen lies in South Holland, just north of Gouda, along the Gouwe, a river and shipping route linking Gouda with Alphen aan den Rijn. The village grew as a ribbon of houses and workshops along the water. That long, narrow shape is still visible on the map, with the Gouwe running along the town for much of its length.
Around the original ribbon, newer districts spread across the surrounding polders. They are laid out in the orderly Dutch pattern of straight streets, ditches and water features. The railway between Gouda and Alphen crosses the town, and the A12 motorway runs just to the south, linking Waddinxveen to the wider Randstad.
