Wadern lies in the north of Saarland, where the land rises toward the Hunsrück. The municipality is made up of a central town and a number of villages spread across wooded hills and farmland. On a map it looks less like one settlement than a group of small centers connected by winding country roads.
The town center is compact, with a short network of streets around its historic core, and the roads leading out of it follow the valleys rather than the high ground.
