Wallingford lies in New Haven County, Connecticut, roughly midway between New Haven and Hartford. Its map runs north to south. The Quinnipiac River flows down the valley, the railway and Route 5 run through the town, and the Wilbur Cross Parkway and Interstate 91 cross its territory. Low ridges rise toward the eastern and western edges.
At the centre, the historic district follows a long, broad Main Street lined with older houses and churches. It dates back to the town's settlement in the 1670s. Just off it lies the campus of Choate Rosemary Hall, one of the best-known boarding schools in the United States, whose buildings and playing fields fill a large area near the town centre.
