Wanshui lies in the mountainous east of Guizhou province, a landscape of steep hills, forested ridges and deep valleys. On a map the town occupies whatever flat ground it can find, so its streets stretch along valley floors rather than spreading evenly in every direction. Roads wind in from the surrounding hills, following the contours to reach it.
Guizhou is known for its karst geology and rugged relief, which make level land scarce and give settlements distinctive, elongated shapes. The name Wanshui can be read as ten thousand waters, fitting for a province laced with streams and small rivers. Around the town, fields and scattered villages cling to the slopes, connected by narrow, twisting roads.
