Weirton Heights occupies the upland area of Weirton, in West Virginia's narrow Northern Panhandle, between Ohio and Pennsylvania. The Ohio River runs in a deep valley below. The Heights spread across the higher ground above, where the land is more rolling and the streets have room to curve.
The Weirton area grew with its steel industry, and Weirton Steel was once one of the largest employers in the state. The mills occupied the valley floor near the river, while neighbourhoods such as the Heights developed on the hills above as the town expanded and residents moved uphill.
