Wettingen lies in the canton of Aargau, on the Limmat river, directly across from the historic town of Baden. From above, it spreads across the flatter land on the river's right bank, with residential streets reaching up toward the Lägern, a long, narrow ridge that runs along the town's northern side.
The town's most famous landmark is Wettingen Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery set in a bend of the Limmat. Founded in the thirteenth century, it is known for its cloister and stained glass, and today it houses a cantonal school. The river loop, the abbey buildings and the surrounding green space form a distinctive feature on the map.
