White Bear Lake lies northeast of Saint Paul, Minnesota, on the shore of the large lake that gives it its name. On a map the lake dominates, a wide, rounded body of water with a scalloped shoreline and Manitou Island near its southeastern side. The city's small downtown sits on the western shore, with residential streets spreading outward in a mix of grid and curving lanes.
The name comes from a Dakota legend about a white bear, which Mark Twain retold in Life on the Mississippi. For more than a century the lake has been a summer destination for families from the Twin Cities, and its shore is lined with houses, beaches, marinas and a sailing club. Railway lines once brought visitors here from Saint Paul, and the downtown still reflects that era.
