Willoughby sits in Lake County, northeast of Cleveland, a short distance inland from Lake Erie. From above, the Chagrin River is the defining feature, bending through the town in wide loops lined with parkland. The historic downtown sits near the river, and residential streets spread outward in a mix of older grids and newer curving subdivisions.
In the nineteenth century the town was home to the Willoughby Medical College, one of the early medical schools in Ohio. Its downtown still keeps many older brick buildings along its main street. Today Willoughby is a commuter and residential town, with the lakeshore and the river valley close by.
