Winchester sits about eight miles north of Boston, and on a map it is framed by water and woodland. The Mystic Lakes line its southern edge, and the rocky, forested Middlesex Fells Reservation spreads across the east. In between, residential streets curve over gentle hills, following the terrain rather than a strict grid.
The Aberjona River flows south through the middle of town towards the lakes, widening into ponds near the town centre. The commuter rail line to Boston runs roughly alongside it, with stations serving the centre and neighbourhoods.
