Wollongong is shaped by two walls. To the west the Illawarra Escarpment rises steeply, dark with forest, and to the east the Pacific Ocean runs along a chain of beaches and rocky points. The city fills the narrow coastal plain between them, a ribbon of suburbs stretching north and south of the central business district, held together by the railway and the main coastal road.
The centre sits near a small harbour and headland, where lighthouses stand above Flagstaff Point. To the south, Port Kembla's steelworks and port have long anchored the local economy, and beyond them Lake Illawarra opens behind the coast.
