Xianfeng is a town within the Chongqing municipality, in the hill country southwest of the main urban area. The terrain here is rarely flat. Low ridges and valleys follow one another, and settlements tend to gather where the ground opens out a little. The town's layout follows the landscape rather than any imposed plan.
On a map this appears as a compact centre with roads leaving it along the easiest lines through the hills. Many of those routes bend repeatedly as they follow the contours.
