Xiaoshi lies in the mountainous east of Liaoning province, in the Benxi area, where the land folds into steep, wooded ridges. The town could not spread in all directions, so it follows the valley floor. From above it forms a narrow band of streets along the river and the main road, with slopes rising close behind the last buildings.
This gives the map a long, stretched shape instead of a round centre. The roads run parallel to the river for most of their length, with short cross streets linking them and a few routes climbing into side valleys. Beyond the town the map empties into terrain, where only thin tracks thread through the hills.
Eastern Liaoning is known for its forests, rivers and autumn colour, and Xiaoshi sits well within that landscape. It is a place better known to the people who live there than to outsiders.
