Yamaguma lies in central Fukuoka Prefecture, in the Asakura area on the northern side of the broad Chikugo plain, southeast of Fukuoka city. From above, the area is defined by agriculture. Rectangular rice paddies are divided by narrow roads and irrigation channels, houses gather in small clusters, and a few larger roads cut across the pattern.
This is an everyday landscape, not one of famous landmarks. Homes, schools and small workplaces spread between the fields, and hills rise not far to the north and east. On a map that makes for a surprisingly graphic image, a grid that is regular but never quite uniform.
