Yengitam lies in the Ili region of northwestern Xinjiang, a wide valley with high ranges on both sides. From above, the landscape is an orderly patchwork. Irrigation channels, tree-lined field boundaries and straight rural roads divide the flat valley floor into long rectangles, and the settlement's streets fit into that geometry.
The built-up area is compact, with around twenty-five thousand people, and houses gathered along a few main roads. Around it, cultivated land stretches away in regular strips. Water shapes this landscape: the valley depends on rivers that come down from the surrounding mountains, and the canals that carry this water appear on the map as thin, precise lines.
