Yongjian is in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture of western Yunnan, south of the Erhai lake region. From above, it occupies part of a flat, cultivated basin enclosed by mountains. The town centre is a cluster of streets and courtyard buildings. Around it, villages and small fields spread across the valley floor before the land rises steeply on all sides.
This basin-and-mountain pattern is typical of the Yunnan plateau. Towns and farmland occupy the level ground, and the slopes stay forested or terraced.
