Youxi lies in the rural southwest of Chongqing municipality, a landscape of steep hills, narrow valleys and farmland cut into terraces. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets set on the lower ground, with the surrounding roads bending and doubling back as they follow the contours.
The mountainous country around Chongqing leaves little room for straight lines. Roads keep close to streams and valley floors, and settlements form wherever the land flattens enough to build.
