Yovon is a town in Khatlon Province in southwestern Tajikistan, south of Dushanbe. It sits in a broad valley between ranges of dry foothills, and from above the contrast is striking. A green patchwork of irrigated fields and orchards surrounds the town, and brown, eroded slopes rise sharply where the cultivated land ends.
Farming in the valley depends on irrigation canals, a system greatly expanded in the Soviet period. Cotton and other crops grow across the plain. The town itself has a largely Soviet-era layout, with straight streets, broad blocks and low-rise housing organised around a main road that runs along the valley.
