Zagreb's map reads in layers from north to south. At the top, the forested slopes of Medvednica descend into the city. Below them sit the two medieval hills, Gradec and Kaptol, with the cathedral and the twisting streets of the Upper Town. A very short funicular still connects the Upper Town with the plain below.
The Lower Town is laid out as a nineteenth-century grid, and through it runs the Lenuci Horseshoe. This U-shaped chain of green squares and parks is lined by museums, the theatre and the botanical garden. It is one of the clearest urban designs in Central Europe and stands out vividly on the map.
Further south, the railway and wide avenues lead to the Sava River, and across it lies Novi Zagreb, a modern district of large residential blocks. A Zagreb map poster shows all these eras side by side in a single composition.
