Zhangjiachuan is the seat of Zhangjiachuan Hui Autonomous County in eastern Gansu, in the uplands near the Guanshan mountains. From above, the town follows a river valley: streets extend along the valley floor in a long, narrow shape, and the steep, terraced loess hills rise on either side.
The county has a large Hui Muslim population, and mosques are an important part of town life. The area has long been a crossing point between Gansu and Shaanxi, and the roads through it follow valleys and passes that have been used for centuries.
