Zhaojia lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, in a landscape of steep hills and narrow valleys. From above, the town occupies the lower ground where the terrain allows building, with streets following the valley floor and houses climbing the lower slopes on either side.
The surrounding land is folded and green, with terraced fields, forests and small villages linked by winding roads. These roads follow contours and switchbacks, giving the map a pattern of curves rather than straight lines. A stream or river usually shapes the valley in towns like this, and the settlement grows along it.
